Onions
Bed preparation
The bed is preapared in the same way as for most of my root crops, so please click on this link for further details and photos.
Sowing
I gather seeds from previous years onions and sow into a single seed tray usually in September once the seeds can be harvested from the flower. The seedlings are them transfered to individual podded seed trays and left in the greenhouse over winter.
If I don't have sufficient seeds I purchase a single bag of onion sets to make up 2 beds.
This year (2020) I purchased a bag of Turbo onions from Wilkos. 500g for £1.50 gave me 140 individual bulbs. On 29th February I planted the bulbs into compartment trays filled with compost in order to give them a head start.

Transplanting
The seedlings are transplanted in early March.
Growing
Most seedlings or bulbs result in a healthy onion as this photo shws.
